South Africa. Commercial Banks. Barry & Nephews (the firm Barry & Nephews traded by ship all along the East coast from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth and from Port Beaufort up the Breede River to Malgas; from here it was a short journey to the Barry trading store in Swellendam), uniface £5 Banknote, 185-, Swellendam, unissued, without full date, serial number or signature, vignette at centre of ox-drawn cart in a South African farmyard, mountains in the background, “On Demand We Promise to pay the Bearer at our Office here, or at CAPE TOWN, the Sum of FIVE POUNDS Sterling” below, printed by Royston & Brown, Sc, London using “HARD STEEL PLATE”, 186mm x 112mm (Hern 29; not listed in Pick). Good very fine with only three fold creases, attractive and very scarce.
