Malcolm IV was crowned King of Scotland on May 23rd, 1153. He ascended to the throne at the very young age of only 11. Malcolm would go on to reign for 12 years until his sudden death in 1165, at only the age of 24. Often referred to as Malcom the Maiden, he was recognised for his enthusiasm with religion and warfare. Such is the excessive rarity of Malcom IV pennies, they are considered a ‘Holy Grail’ among collectors of Scottish coins. The opportunity to own one is extremely unusual, with the last example on the market sold at a London auction house in 2005, for a staggering £16,120 including buyer’s premium.
