India General Service Medal, 1895-1902, single clasp, Punjab Frontier 1897-98 (4949 Pte. J. Chalmers 2d Bn Arg: & Suth’d Highrs); officially engraved in running script. Lightly toned, suspension a touch loose, a few light contact marks, otherwise VF / GVF.
John Chalmers, from Gordon, near the border town of Kelso, enlisted for service with the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders at Edinburgh on the 23rd of November, 1893. He enlisted at the age of 22, having formerly worked as an Attendant. Wish a somewhat chequered conduct history, and spent several months in prison, prior to returning to regular service, reaching the rank of Lance Corporal, before being again reduced to Private due to misconduct. He saw service abroad in India, South Africa and Malta, and remained with the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders until his discharge by request on the 31st of March, 1912.
The Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders served in Afghanistan with the 2nd Brigade of the Mohmand Field Force under Major General E. R. Elles.
