India General Service Medal, 1854-95, one clasp, Umbeyla, awarded to Private Amos Edwards, 1st Battalion, 7th Foot Fusiliers, (871 A. Edwards H.Ms. 1st. Bn. 7th. Regt.), impressed in small capitals, light contact marks to obverse otherwise very fine.
This clasp was awarded for an expedition against Muslims in Sittana particularly the village of Malka during the period 20th October to 23 December 1863. The Yusafzai Field Force of approximately 5,600 men under Brigadier Sir N.B. Chamberlain KCB and subsequently under Major general Sir. J. Garvock KCB advanced up the Umbeyla Pass but encountered very strong opposition. Heavy casualties were sustained in attempts to hold the “Eagle’s Nest” and Crag Piquet”. Some of the most sever fighting of the North West Frontier occurred during this campaign and the expedition suffered over 900 casualties. The 1/7th Foot joined the expedition in November 1863 with 470 men of this Regiment receiving the clasp Umbeyla. Sold with copied Medal Roll confirming award to 871 Private Amos Edwards.
