Description
Henry II (1154-1189), Penny, Tealby coinage, Class C2, figure 9 [1161-65], Penny, Newcastle mint, moneyer Willem, facing crowned large and coarse bust, jewels collar Rev, cross potent with a small cross potent in angles, legend surrounds WILAM : ON : NEV, 1.49g (S.1339; N.957; BMC.589; Fig 9). Toned, weak in one part of obverse reflected on reverse, otherwise strong detail both sides, especially in the portraiture. Better than usually encountered for a notoriously weakly struck issue. Bold very fine for type, scarce mint.
