Cnut (1016-1035), Silver Penny, Quatrefoil Type, Cambridge Mint, Moneyer Ornst, crowned and draped bust left with quatrefoil, legend commences at top, +CNVT REX ANGLO, outer bearded circle surrounding both sides, rev long voided cross with pellet centre and tri-crescent terminals, over quatrefoil with pellet on each cusp, +OR NS TI G RAT, 0.96g (BMC type VIII; N.781; S.1157).
Lightly toned, good very fine.
This coin struck from dies of the late class A ‘London’ style as defined by Blackburn and Lyon in their article ‘Regional Die-Production in Cnut’s Quatrefoil Issue’ chapter 13 of Anglo-Saxon Monetary History. These dies therefore cut at London and supplied for use to strike coinage in Cambridge.
