Description
Charles I (1625‑1649), AR octagonal Shilling 1648, Pontefract Besieged, struck in 1649 after the execution of Charles I and bearing the name of his son, Charles II. Castle gate with flag at the top flanked by “”P”” and “”C””, at the right end a cannon protrudes. At the left vertically, OBS., CAROLVS: SECVNDVS: 1648. rev . Jewelled crown at top over C R, DVM:SPIRO: SPERO. 4.61gm. (Brooker‑1234 (same dies); N 2648; S 3150). Attractively toned. Obverse good very fine. The reverse stronger and nearer to extremely fine.
