Description
Canute (1016-35), Penny, Short cross type (c.1029-35/36), London Mint, moneyer Leofric, diademed bust left with lis tipped sceptre, legend surrounding, CNVT RECX. Rev, voided short cross, within linear circle and legend surrounding, reads +LIOFRIC O ON LVND, much of mint signature ligate, 1.20g (S.1159; N.790; BMC XVI; SCBI 14 [Copenhagen, Part IIIb], 2868, same dies).
Fully centred strike, bright tone with underlying golden hues in the outer regions. Portrait, softness in drapery, King’s profile and sceptre excellent, obverse legends comprehensive, some fade and wear in the die. Reverse, script legible with one weak spot a 9 o’clock, the F of Liofric blocked letter puncheon. Free from peckmarks, in good weight. Good very fine, pleasing.
