Afghanistan Medal 1878-1880, no clasp, awarded to Private Barney McCanan1st Battalion 5th Regiment Fusiliers (Northumberland Fusiliers), (2322. Pte B. McCanan. 1/5th Fusrs.), very fine.
Barney McCanan enlisted with the 83rd Regiment on the 18th February 1858 he transferred to the 33rd Regiment on the 18th December 1861 and to the 1st Battalion of the 5th Regiment on the 31st October 1872. He served in India at Agra, Secunderabad, Madras, Bareilly and Rangoon in Burma. He served in Afghanistan from the 20th March 1879 to the 8th June 1879. He was awarded the Long Service & Good Conduct Medal with Gratuity of £5.0.0 on the 1st December 1876. He retired from the Army on the 29th September 1879 after serving 21 years 224 days with the Colours.
