Aethelred II (978-1016), Penny, Long cross type (c.997-1003), Canterbury mint, moneyer Leofric, bare headed bust left, pellet behind, legend commences from bottom left +ÆĐELRÆD REX Λ. Rev, long voided cross with tri-crescent terminals, pellet at centre, reads +LEOFRIC MO CÆN, 1.35g (S.1151; N.774; BMC IVa; cf. SCBI 16 [Norweb], 180). Darkly toned, striking crack with a small perforation as a result, few peckmarks. Rarer mint signature omitting the the T in Caent. Legends and portrait clear, an academic specimen.
