Description
A Casualty Medal to Sergeant Colin Vernon Short RAFVR who was Killed in a Flying Accident on the 1st of September 1944 when he was engaged on a training exercise, flying for 35 minutes before the accident. His aircraft crashed into rising ground during unauthorised low flying on the tail of another aircraft. The aircraft struck the ground during a turn. The verdict of the Court of Enquiry was Un-authorised low flying.
It is stated that Sergeant Short persuaded a Sergeant Duke to let him act as third pilot on an Operational sortie on the evening of the 6th of June 1944. After successful completion of the Operation to tow a Horsa Glider to Normandy both Sergeant Short and Sergeant Duke were arrested and charged. Contemporary newspaper cuttings reporting Sergeant Short’s death mention this trip to Normandy and another to drop supplies to the French Resistance. Colin Vernon Short was the son of Ernest Harold and Gertrude Alice Short of Northampton, he is remembered with Honour at the Northampton and Counties Crematorium, he was 22 years old when he was killed.
